Henry attended trade school from May 1, 1919 to April 30, 1923, graduating as a
machinist. He left Germany aboard the "Sierra Ventana" from Bremen on August
27, 1927. He had $25 and was one of 27 aliens, according to the passenger list.
He attended a Methodist Church in Elizabeth, N.J. and met Ted Bargmann who
would become a life-long friend. Ted taught Henry to speak English so that he
could find work. They worked together at a paint factory until they could buy a
Ford automobile and drove to Chicago, Illinois. Henry and Ted attended the First
Methodist Church where Dr. Leoppert was the pastor. Henry met Gertrude
Wilmer there. He was part-time janitor at the church.
He began working as a machinist at the Union Special Machine Company in
- He was an active soccer player for the German-American Sport Club.
He retired in July, 1967 after 36 years of Service. He and Marie moved to Golden
Gate, Florida in 1969. He developed cancer and died in 1981. He is buried in
Naples Memorial Gardens in Naples, Florida.
