He took over his father's farm in 1939 and soon after WW II began. He took part in the French Campaign and was in Brest where he talked about bathing in the Atlantic Ocean. Then he went to Russia in the hüls of Waldal, near Welikije Luki and Witebsk and in the swamps of Priplet. He was injured by grenades in October of 1944 and was not fit for further combat. He went to a hospital in Prague when Elisabeth got him moved to a hospital in Melsungen. He was in an American prison and released in August of 1945.
