Fred Or Fredrich AHLF

2003 7 15: reported to be in Hoboken, NJ in 1886 by Wilhelm Ahlf probate data. notes on location in Kansas from Katherine Willis I am looking for information on a Frederick/Friedrich AHLF who homesteaded in Stevens County on an 1886 claim adjoining my great-grandparents. Since my great-grandmother's name was Elisabeth AHLF I assume there is a relationship. It looks as if he moved out of Stevens County - it was a tough time for homesteaders. Has anyone seen any AHLFs in Kansas? Does anyone have access to a 1900 census for Kansas or death index? Please let me know if you have any suggestions. See herman Miller for link to Eliz Ahlf 2003 7 : more >> Thank you for sending me the letter too - I have been playing around with the AHLF family quite a bit in the last few months, and am have plenty of evidence now to connect my great-grandmother Elise AHLF MILLER (of Stevens County-Nashville, IL-Chicago) with her brother George in Nashville., IL, her brother Wilhelm in St. Louis, and her brother Friedrich in Hoboken, New Jersey/Long Island. Henry Ahlf is a half-brother from the first marriage, apparantly George didn't like him at all, so not much connection with that family. Friedrich's wife (possibly 2nd wife) was Ernestine, daughter Emilie "Emmy". 2003 8 - Katherine Wills: Dear Janet and Kent, Here is what info that I have on Wilhelm/William AHLF, brother of my greatgrandmother Elise AHLF MILLER. I would love any more info or corrections. He was born 8 April 1854 in Hannover. (Maybe Isensee/Cuxhaven). It looks to me as if he immigrated to America on June 11, 1873 on the Ship Thuringia, Manifest ID#00032950. 17 years old, "cigar maker". In 1877 he was listed in St. Louis City directory as occupation "cigar", residence 2909 Franklin Avenue, which is not far west of central downtown St. Louis. 1879 listed in St. Louis directory as William Ahlf, cigars, residence 1304 Morgan, also near downtown. 1880- In US census in St. Louis, occupation, "tobacco and cigars". Living on Eighth Street in the 2nd ward, at #718. According to his brother George AHLF's obituary, Wilhelm travelled in Illinois with this occupation, maybe buying the tobacco?. Wilhelm had a small cigar making factory and shop. 1881- Ahlf, William, cigars, shop 712 Franklin Avenue (where the conference center is now, north of the arch), residence 925 north 8th Street. 1883/4 St. Louis Directory: Wilhelm has the same shop, but residence 809 Washington, also in the center of St. Louis. George Ahlf is living nearby, a clerk for M. KOHRS. On 28 November 1880 Wilhelm married Emma Emilie Louise MEIER (later MEYER). They married in St. Charles, St. Charles, MO. Their church in St. Louis was Immanuel Lutheran Church, and the church records include his death and birth date, but unfortunately not his place of birth or parents. He died on 25 october 1883 in St. Louis from "Gehrnentzuendung" or brain fever. His death certificate says "softening of the brain". Buried Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church cemetery in St. Louis. I have info on his wife's parents if you want that. The church records say that he was "29 years 6 months 13 days", the death certif says "29 years, 6 months, 17 days." George's daughter writes that Wilhelm, Friedrich and Elise were his siblings, and George's obit talks about his brother Wilhelm in St. Louis. Incidentally, George married Wilhelm's wife's sister.
