Highlights from the Preliminary Trial transcripts, 15 Dec 1939
Jack had numerous aliases (changing his names around in different orders; so we still do not know his true identity). He refused an attorney to represent him. When arrested by the Sheriff of Escambia County, one H. E. Gandy, he pleaded insanity and not guilty. Gandy discovered his driving licences had "J Clayton Sloan" and he had changed his social security card to"Clayton Jackson Sloan". Mr. Gandy also testified that Jack added the "e" himself. The court appointed two physicians that deemed him sane and able to stand trial; he subsequently pleaded guilty. Sybil Sowell was on the witness stand and questioned by Jack. He asked whether or not she recognised her husband and she did. He asked if her husband had any identifying marks such as tattoos. She responded that he did not but that he had a scar acquired from an operation as he waswounded in World War I. Jack then told the Judge that he did in fact have tattoos that he had had for years already and that he could show the Judge privately.Jack said that the scar was from an operation he received in New York. Sibyl also testified that she cared for Jack during 2 months of illness. He acquired rooms at 1101 N. Alcaniz at Pensacola on 11 August 1939, after Sybil visited the doctor and was bedridden for the rest of her pregnancy. Jack wasn't seen at this address again after September 1939. Brad Horn testified that Jack had started working at his grocery shop from 7 October 1939 and that he had been a trustworthyand conscientious employee. Sibyl testified that one month after the birth of her son John; she was reading the newspaper and came across the marriage announcement dated 10 December 1939. She went to the police the very next day to report Jack. Jack was allowed to make a statement by the Judge. He stated that whilst ina boarding house at Atlanta, Georgia- the landlady asked him to share his roomsas it was full. He stated everyone mistook the two of them; one for the other. He also said that the other man took his clothing and documents and disappeareda few days later. The transcripts ended there.
telephone conversation with Curtis Reedy, 16 Jan 2013
Curtis Reedy is the much younger brother of Marcella Reedy (the girl Jack Sloane was engaged to on 10 Dec 1939; see attached marriage announcement from the newspaper). Curtis saw JackSloane as a young boy and was able to identify Jack Sloane as the mystery man after having seen the torn up and taped together photo. Curtis also said that Jack Sloane made trips to Mobile, Alabama and sometimes his sister accompanied him.Jack always came back to Marcella with money in hand. His family had decided that the bigamy charges against Jack were trumped up... they also believed that hecould have been a spy. Different sources confirmed that German U-Boots droppedspies all over the Gulf Coast at the time...
