Obituary

Joseph Daum, Huron Pioneer, Dies At 92 Joseph Daum, 92-year-oldpioneer of Huron died in St. John`s Hospital Saturday afternoon at 2:35 following an illness of long duration. Daum was born June 29, 1858, in Buffalo County,Wis., and came to Huron March 1, 1883, as a carpenter to help build the WrightHouse, a hotel which stood where the Great Northern depot now stands. On October29, 1885 he married Anna Lovisa Gustafson to which union were born four children: Mrs. Kathryn Johnson, Joseph Daum, Roy Daum, and Harry Daum. His wife preceded him in death February 19, 1936 and one son, Joseph, jr. died in 1945. Surviving are four grandsons, one granddaughter and seven great-grandchildren. One grandson, Harry A. Daum, was killed in World War II. He had operated a coal and fuelbusiness which he gradually enlarged to a lumber business which was sold to J.F. Anderson Lumber Company in 1911. In 1936 he built Daum`s Auditorium which hemanaged until Feb. 1, 1948 when he retired because of illness and a leg amputation. In 1920 he built the brick building occupied by Basket Grocery and Daum`s Apartment on Second St. S.W. and the Cloverleaf Apartment Building in north Huronin 1926.
