Darby McCarty of Shenandoah County, VA gave his consent for his granddaughter Sarah to marry Thomas North on 16 April 1787, Shenandoah County, VA,Marriage Records. Sarah is commonly believed to be a daughter of James McCarty. Is there anything that supports or throws doubt on this common belief?
Giving consent for marriage implies that Darby had custody of his granddaughter Sarah, which implies that she was living with him at the time of her marriage. How does a granddaughter end up living with her grandfather of the same last name? Sarah could have been born to a daughter of Darby’s while she was living with herparents and before she was married, which would explain both her living with her grandfather and having the same last name. However, all of Darby’s 6 daughters did get married, and had this been the case, Sarah would have left her grandfather’s when her mother moved in with her new husband. Since Sarah was probablyliving with Darby when she got married, this scenario is unlikely. This leads me to believe that, of all of Darby’s 11 known children, only James had a child-and an explanation to that child living with her grandfather- who could be the Sarah who marries Thomas North.
What we know about James’s family from Darby’sBible is that he has one child born 29 October 1767 whose name is unknown, butends in the letter h. Is this child the Sarah who marries Thomas North?
Overthe years I have seen several names given to James’s child whose name ends withthe letter h. The three most common are Sarah, Enoch and Elizabeth. The fourth most common is Jonas which I will comment on at the end.
Sarah: In the Sunderland Letter we are told James’s wife was killed when his son, John, was very young in 1777, and John was taken to live with his mother’s people the Fugates. If John was taken to live with others then some or all of his siblings may have also gone to live with others. Sarah would have been about 9 or 10 when James’swife was killed. This may explain why Sarah is living with Darby and not her parents when she marries. If Sarah was James’s daughter then she was 19 years, 5 months, and 18 days old when she married Thomas North. In the 1830 census of Hocking, Fairfield, Ohio, Sarah is living with her husband Thomas North and listedas being 60 – 69 years old, or born between 1760 and 1769. This really supportsSarah being James’s daughter. It fits, but it’s not proof.
Enoch: Born 5 January 1783, Enoch was a son of Benjamin McCarty. He is found in Grainger County,TN marriage records as a Bondsman for Scott Powell and Nancy McCarty on 5 January 1803, his 20th birthday. Nancy McCarty was his sister. Simply because he’s aMcCarty whose first name ends in the letter h and he lived in Grainger County, TN, at the right time, some people believe he was James’s son.
Elizabeth: TheJames in question (born 1736) had a son named James, born 3 July 1773. James (1773) and wife Sarah move to Cumberland County, KY and buy 100 acres on Wisdom Branch of Marrowbone Creek on 11 March 1819 (deed book A, page 531), and may havelived there a long time. James (1773) has a child he names Pollard Wisdom McCarty, who was born in 1805 in Kentucky. Coincidentally, an Elizabeth McCarty marries a Pollard Wisdom on 28 April 1803 in Cumberland County, KY. Since James (1773) seems to name his son after Pollard just two years after their wedding, itmakes some people wonder if there is a connection. Could Elizabeth be James’s (1773) mysterious sibling whose name ends in h, and James (1773) names his son after his new brother-in-law? For those that think this may be the case, the scenario goes like this: Elizabeth may have lived with her father James (1736) until his death in 1802. She then moved with her brother James (1773) to CumberlandCounty, KY. There she meets and marries Pollard Wisdom in 1803. If she was theolder James’s daughter then she would have been 35 years, 5 months and 30 days old on 28 April 1803. James A Jobe, and other researchers, gives this Elizabeth’sdate of birth as 01 Aug 1786; if true she is not James child who was born 29 Oct 1767. See Elizabeth below.
Elizabeth: An Elizabeth McCarty marries a Pollard Wisdom on 28 April 1803 in Cumberland County, KY. James’s (born 1736) son James was born 3 July 1773. This James (1773) and wife Sarah move to Cumberland County, KY and buy 100 acres on Wisdom Branch of Marrowbone Creek on 11 March 1819;A-531 but may have lived there much longer. James (1773) and Sarah name one of their sons Pollard Wisdom McCarty; he was born about 1805 in Kentucky. Because James seems to name one of his sons after Elizabeth’s husband you have to wonder if there is some relationship between the two; is Elizabeth McCarty James’s sister? Elizabeth may have lived with her father James (1736) until his death in 1802. She then moved with her brother James (1773) to Cumberland County, KY. There she meets and marries Pollard Wisdom in 1803. If she was the older James’s daughter then she would have been 35 years, 5 months and 30 days old on 28 April 1803. James A Jobe gives this Elizabeth’s date of birth as 01 Aug 1786; if true sheis not James daughter who was born 29 Oct 1767. See Elizabeth below.
So whilethere is no proof that Darby’s granddaughter Sarah is James’s daughter; from what we know at this time it seems to be the logical conclusion. Her names ends inthe letter h, she is the right age, and has a reason to be living with her grandfather. What is needed is proof- a Bible record or a headstone with her date ofbirth. Better yet would be a list of James’s heirs with Sarah North in it.
Elizabeth: For those who have to find a connection between James and Elizabeth, there is the possibility she was James’s niece- a daughter of James’s brother Isaac who was born 2 March 1766. Isaac is the only child that we know almost nothing about, so while we have no evidence this is the case, or any reason to believe this is the case, this is the most logical possibility for a connection. Isaac would have been 20 years 4 months and 30 days old when Elizabeth was born 1 August 1786. Because Pollard and Elizabeth name their first child Nancy McCartyWisdom there are those who believe Elizabeth’s mother’s name was Nancy. All of this is pure speculation.
Jonas McCarty: there is a probate record for a James McCarty in Shenandoah County, VA that lists a son named Jonas and many people mistakenly assume this James is Darby’s son James. He is not; Darby’s son James dies much later in Grainger County, TN.
