Date of birth
Darby’s date of birth is unknown but he was born between 1700 and 1721. There are many dates given to Darby McCarty’s birth. The datesaround 1716 were based on him being 20 years old, more or less, when he marriedin 1736. It’s more common to see 1710 or 1711 because there is a belief that hehad reached the age of 50 when he was released from duty from the Frederick County VA Militia on October 09, 1761. Those who had to serve could do so until theage of 60. The men were relived from duties at Court martial which were held once a year. The one held before Darby was relived was held on October 31, 1760, this would give us a date of birth between October 31, 1700 and October 09, 1701 if he had to serve until age 60. However discharges came at the end of service orend of a war, depending on what the enlistment was for the soldier. The act only required a list of men between 16 and 60 for possible service. He could have been relived at any age but he was no older than 60 when relived from duty and born after October 9, 1700. And he was most likely 15 or older when he married in1736 and born in or before 1721. Mike Rose took the lead on the release from duty research. Place of birth
Unknown, There is no documentation for Darby’s place of birth.
Date of death
Unknown, sometime after 14 April 1787 when Darby McCarty gives consent for his granddaughter, SarahMcCarty, to marry Thomas North in Shenandoah County, VA. Some genealogical programs don’t allow anything but dates so the word “after” has been left off of hisgranddaughters date of marriage. There is no documentation for his date or place of death. Place of deathUnknown, Mr. O. U. Conwell in his 1955 family sheetmade popular the belief Darby died in Sand Mountain, AL. He copied this information from the Sunderland letter that says Darby, a brother of James, moves to Sand Mountain, AL. Mr. Conwell doesn’t mention Darby being James’ brother and otherresearchers were unaware of its source. Uncle Frank in the Sunderland letter isobviously confused because James didn’t have a brother named Darby. It has beenassumed, by some, it means James’ father Darby. But even if he did mean James’father it doesn’t say he died there. Who the Sunderland letter is referring to is unknown and how long they stayed there isn’t given. So where James’ father, Darby, dies is unknown.
