At age two he came with his family to Woodbury County and settled ona farm south of Correctionville. Mr. Coon was a member of the Correctionville Church of Christ. He had been a member of the Correctionville school board and amember of the city council for a number of years. He had been in the automobilebusiness but his main concern was retail sale of coal. On September 27, 1900, hewas united in marriage with Olive Mae Mayclin. Their children were: the two whodied in infancy and daughter Fern and a son Wayne who preceded him in death; Mildred, Ellis and Gene. Alva was married to Cecil Casey Binkley January 21, 1957,and they shared many happy years here. His wife Cecil lived on here for awhilethen went to reside in Redding, Calif., to be near her daughters by a former marriage. Footnote: During the 1950's an adult school was organized here and therewere many diverse activities taught at night school in our high school building.Questionnaires were sent out to learn what studies the adults would be interested in. Among those checked on the list were typing, arts, crafts, and many others, but so many added square dancing to the list it was decided to have a class in the gymnasium. But who would teach us? Alva and Olive volunteered to teach usthe art of square dancing . So at age seventy-five, Alva and wife Olive came twonights a week and taught about fifty of us to follow the calls and dance. Our swingers club never forgot this kindness. All the others charged for these lessons, but not Alva. He said it was a privilege not a chore. Alva Coon departed ourtown at age 96 but he never grew old.
