Árpád the founder of Hungary, the high prince (fejedelem) was the son of Álmos, and ruled the Hungarian area between 895 and 900. He was the leader of the Magyar tribes who occupied the Carpathian basin in 896, following the Huns by the same route they used to enter Europe from the Urals. He was also the first ruler of the settled Magyars, holding the first parliamentary session with 40 other nobles on horseback before 900 AD. They continued to ravage western Europe until their defeat by Holy Roman German Emperor Otto I "the Great" in 955. The 40 nobles and Árpád represented an extended family that had migrated from somewhere around the Ural Mountains. Upon entering the Carpathian basin, they represented about 200,000 people who had been traveling from their original location for about 25 years. Considering losses along the way, approximately 500,000 people had gotten up and left. It is also known that three other Magyar speaking groups left this same area about the same time. One went west and north settling in what today is known as Lapland and Estonia. One went east and north and currently have descendants living in Siberia, somewhat north of Lake Baykal. A third group of about the same size as the one that departed for Hungary settled north of Iran. They were wiped out in the ensuing conflicts with the Mongolians and the Persians. So, the interesting question is "Why and how did over a million people who shared a common culture, decide to move on?" His children were Tarhos (Tarkacsu), Üllo (Jeleg), Jutas (Jutocsa), an unknown child and Zolta (Zaltasz). http://en.wikipedia.org
