Joellen McFarland Stringfellow, 81, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 10, in the company of her family. Born in Springfield, IL, to Glenn and Emelie McFarland, Jo went on to attend DePauw University, where she met her husband of 59 years, Carlton "Bud" Benjamin Stringfellow. Jo and Bud graduated from DePauw in 1958 and were married in June of that year. They began their family while Bud was enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. In 1962 they moved to Severna Park, MD, where they resided for 23 years. Jo was an active, dedicated mother to her three children and was involved with the Cub Scouts, Brownies, and Green Hornets as they grew up. Jo was also very active in the Severna Park High School Sports Boosters, where she served as president and spent many years in the concession stand, while cheering for their three children on various teams. Jo also worked part-time at Clement Hardware Store. Jo was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and PEO. In 1985 Bud and Jo moved to Queenstown, MD, where they stayed for 20 years in their "farm on the bay." They spent many great years hosting family and friends' vacations and events on the farm, where the six grandchildren learned to swim, catch crabs, pick apples, and go camping. The 4th of July was a particularly special time for the family to gather, and Jo looked forward each year to the Stringfellow "Iron Man" competition, hot dogs, and fireworks. In 2005 they relocated to Symphony Village in Centreville, MD, where they became involved with the local elementary school volunteer programs. As their grandchildren grew, Jo and Bud could always be found on the sidelines of sports fields and courts. Jo was never without her special sports bag of snacks, which she shared equally with hungry parents and athletes. Jo was loved by family and friends across the country and was known for her warm smile and infectious laugh, along with her kindness and fun-loving spirit. She will be deeply missed by all those whose lives she touched. Jo is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, George Edward McFarland, Jr. She is survived by her beloved husband, Bud, and her three children and their spouses, David and Denise (Smith) Stringfellow, Peter and Susan (Stringfellow) Ainsworth, and John and Amy (Sherrill) Stringfellow. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Laura Stringfellow, Emily Ainsworth, Benjamin Stringfellow, Nicholas Stringfellow, Sarah Ainsworth, and Gregory Stringfellow. Services are private and the family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Compass Regional Hospice, 160 Coursevall Dr., Centreville, MD 21617.
