Die Gerber (auch Lohgerber, Löher, Loher) gehörten zu den unreinen Handwerken. Bei der pflanzlichen Gerberei (vegetabile Gerbung, Lohgerberei, Rotgerbung) werden Pflanzenteile von zum Beispiel Quebracho-, Kastanien- oder Eichenholz, Mimosen-, Sumach- und anderen Holz- beziehungsweise Rindengerbstoffe zur Gewinnung der Gerberlohe eingesetzt. Aus dieser Nutzung entstanden die Lohwälder. Die pflanzlichen Gerbmittel werden in einer Lohmühle gemahlen und mit Wasser ausgelaugt. Der verwendete Sud wird auch Brühe oder Extrakt genannt.
