Georg Goddard STUMPF

George Goodhart Stump/Stumpff married Mary Ellen Kimberlain in Washington County KY in 1795. To them we find six children who grew to adulthood, as proven in a Deed dated 1837, in Washington County.He was a farmer, earliest record says he bought land in the year 1797, on Long Run or Louse Run. In a short time he sold this land and bought land, (see Deed Bk. A Pg. 476 and Bk. C Pg. 486) on Prathers Creek, junction with Beech Fork. 1810 Census of Washington County KY reads: George G. Stump; 3 males under 10; 2 males 10 to 16 (John & Henry); 1 male 45 or over. Females; 1 under 10; 1, 10 to 16(Elizabeth & Mary); 1 over 45; no slaves. 1837 record, from Deed book N, dated 09 Sep 1837, Gives for the love and affection he has for them his children, all the land he possesses, 225 acres on thebanks of Prathers Creek. 19 Sep 2005 Since I by chance found that he, my GGGGGrandfather had already been mentioned here...I am updating that info. I recently received a copy of a personal letter froma distant relative to my GGrandfather's (George W.) Grandaughter, dated 1992. I am sharing some pertinent info from that for any of my possible 'cousins' out there. He said that he went to KENTUCKY and learned more about the "original George Goodhart Stumpff Sr. from reports on file there (from descendants) of 2 sons who came to Holden, MISSOURI in 1837 and 1845. These were brothers of of GeorgeG. JR. who came to Coffey Co. KANSAS in 1857 and died in 1869. " He went on to say that he hoped to meet some of these descendants sons as "they have several heirlooms and documents from the originalGeorge G." <p>Their records show that George G. Stumpff Sr. was from OSTHEIM Germany and came as a stowaway in 1776 at age 15 or 16. He was found out before embarking and was put into the German Army fighting with the British troops by the ships captain. The British Army unit under Colonell Rall, was assigned by the British to the Battle of Trenton NJ at Christmas of 1776 where he was among the German's captured by Washington's Army in their surprise attack. The prisoners were taken to camps in western Virginia, (Winchester, Charlottesville and Reclimard.) Spelling??? Following the end of the northern fighting in 1781, the prisoners were released but any wanting to return to Germany had to pay his own way. Most had no money so many decided to remain among the many German settlers of Virginia, PA andMaryland from 1709-1770. Our George, a bachelor, did not want to return to Germany and apparently stayed among other German settlers. Somehow he ended up in Washington Co. KY by November 1795 when hemarried Mary Ellen Kimberlain. ( or lin) Mary Ellens's Father was born in 1747 on a farm in West VA, today which was 5 miles SE of Cumberland MD and across the Potomac. After Marriage about 1771 theywere living in the Northwest part of what today is Hampshire Co. West VA. By 1782, they moved to Central KY in 1791 and to Washington Co. KY in 1792. Whether there was any prior contact between Georgeand Mary E. before 1795, has not been ascertained. George Jr. dropped the last 'f' in the name and George W (his son) dropped the second' f'."
