From the Biographical and Industrial Edition of "The Scott County Missouri Newsboy", Vol. XIII, Benton, Mo., April 20, 1900, No.11, Page 13 JOHN P. WESTRICH, Who is a brother of Henry Westrich, was born on the old homestead, one-quarter of a mile from New Hamburg, in 1859. Until 19 years of age he remained upon the farm, when he commenced the trade of wagon making with his uncle John Westrich at this place. His uncle was in this business for half a century or more, having served his apprenticeship in Germany. The old gentleman is still a resident of the country, and will be 85 years old before the present year closes. The subject of this sketch was given a thorough schooling by his uncle in his chosen trade and soon developed talent that showed he had natural tastes for the business. Nineteen years ago he took charge of the shop he now conducts and has run it continuously since. There is no question of his ability and hasthoroughly proven his skillfulness as a builder of wagons and buggies and a repairer of the same. He manufactures a great many wagons at his place, and the demand for his products is continually increasing. He does the woodwork and Mr. Stehr, the town blacksmith, spoken of in another place, does the ironwork. Between them they make a wagon that for durability and service cannot be excelled.
