THERE ARE OTHER NEWPAPER CLIPPINGS ABOUT THE ACCIDENT-----EACH PAPER SAID ABOUT THE SAME THING, I'M NOT SURE WHICH ARTICAL CAME FROM WHICH PAPER SIX YOUTHS HOSPITALIZED IN ROAD TRAGEDY INVER GROVE CAR CRASH KILLS TWO INVER GROVE----- The Merrimac road is one of the shortest in Dakota County but Tuesday night it led to the sudden deaath of two young men of the area and the injury of six others. Authorities said a beer drinking spree during the evening came to its tragic halt when the car left the road and struck a tree on the road which links TH 56 and the Middle road just south of South \Grove. Killed in the crash were Gerald Schlussler, 21, of RT. 1, So. St. Paul, reported to have been the driver of the car, and Alphonse Leyk, 19, of 136 18th Ave. S., So. St. Paul, both of whom were in the front seat. Willis Maltby, 19, of Rt. 10, So. St. Paul, owner of the car, was said to have been seated between the two youths who were killed but escaped with possible head and chest injuries. He and his five injured companions were removed to Ancker hospital. Recovering from their injuries are George W. Ferrin, 19, of 598 E. Orange, St. Paul; Allah Braun, 18, of Rt. 1, So. St. Paul; John Gaiovnik, 18, of 1225 Jesse, St. Paul; Roger Galbraith, 19, of 488 Holly, whose wrist was fractured; and Orville Kromschroeder, 20, of Rt. 1, So. St. Paul. Schlussler had been given the choice Monday in So. St. Paul municipal court of going to Dakota county jail for 30 days or paying a $ 50 fine for driving after suspension of his license. Had he chosen to take the jail sentence he would not have been in the fatal accident but he elected to pay the fine. Deputy Sheriff Donald Weiland went to the scene and found that the car had gone off the road for some 500 feet and then smashed into a tree. The road was one familiar to several of the boys, including the driver, as they lived in the area. Weiland and others worked for nearly an hour to extricate the bodies of the dead youths and remove Maltby, as the roof of the car had been crushed in such a way as to trap the trio in the front seat. It was reported that three full six-packs of beer and "severak dozen empty beer cans and bottles were found in or near the wreckage. Bodies of the two youths who were killed were removed to the English & Meeker funeral home in So. St. Paul where arrangements for funeral services were being made at press time. Dr. R. W. Marks of Wes St. Paul, Dakota county coroner, was called to the scene and took official charge. IT WAS PROVED AFTER THE FACT THAT GERALD HAD DIED BEFORE THE ACCIDENT EVER TOOK PLACE, HE HAD STABBED HIS FOOT WITH A PITCHFORK AND NEVER TOOK CARE OF IT, HE HAD BLOOD POISONING, HE NEVER KNEW WHAT HIT HIM. THEY WERE ON A BACHLOR PARTY AS GERALD WAS TO BE MARRIED THE NEXT DAY.
