Johann Herman Sternberger has been Swedish, later employed by Palatine Cavalry. He was a Lieutinent in the war from 1618-1648, also called the Thirty Years War. There were many Swedish troops in Germany. The church register says nothing about our common ancestor Sternberger. He was paid first as a Swedish soldier, later as a soldier of the Pfalz. (From W. Raab).   More from Wolfgang Raab, email dated Oct 27, 2003 "Hello,   I am not familiar in writing English, but I hope you can read it nevertheless...   I'm searching the origin of my anquestor Johann Hermann Sternberger (ab. 1610 -1687). At www.ancestry.com I found your informations concerning Joh. Hermann Stzernberger.   You wrote: Birth: ABT 1610 Probably Sweden.   I think there is a missunderstanding of the german church records:   When he died in Eyschweyler (nowadays: Thaleischweiler - 3 miles next Pirmasens) he was registrated as "Schwedischer Vnd Pfälzischer Leuthenambt zu Pferdt". This means: Lieutenant of Cavalry in the Swedish and in the Palatinate Army.   His son Johann Georg St. is called "Sohn des Johann Sternberger, schwedischer und nachmals pfälzischer Soldat zu Pferd": Son of Johann Sternberger, Soldier in the Swedisch and afterward Palatinate Cavalry. You wrote: According to Church Records, he was from Sweden. this is a missunderstanding of the record.   King Gustav Adolf of Sweden, entered the "30 Jährigen Krieg" (War of thirty years) 1630 as a leader of the lutheran forces in Germany against the catholic territories and the (catholic) German Kaiser. The "Kurpfalz" (Electorate Palatinate) was also governed lutheran. Being officer of an armee didn't say anything about the nationality of the person. There were catholic german leaders fighting forthe lutheran swedish armee, lutheran german princes in the duty of the catholic french king and so on. There existed dozens of armies in the 30-year-war (1618-1648) and they often changed their coalition for political or financial reasons.   You suppose the marriage of Joh. Hermann Sternberger and his wife Anna Maria Sturm took place in sweden. The Church record says: "Tochter von Konrad Sturm, Jäger und Forstmeister in Adelsheim im Odenwald". This means: daughter of Konrad Sturm, gamekeeper and forestkeeper in Adelsheim in the Odenwald. Odenwald is a region south of Frankfurt, 50 miles from Pirmasens. At this time the Odenwald belonged to the Palatinate.   The church records do not say anything about the origin of J.H. Sternberger. But as the swedish army in Germany had some swedish officers and a minority of swedish soldiers, it is well possible that he came from Sweden.   But there is another theory about his origin:   During the 30-year-war hundreds of cities have been occupied and ruined by the fighting armees. There exist cities which have been plundered and devastated ten times. Often cities had to fight against'friendly' armies, which looked for money, food, horses or new soldiers.   The small city of Schwarza, territory of the lutheran Count of Sachsen-Meiningen (today in Thueringen) has been occupied by Swedish troops between 1630 and 1635 (I don't know the year). And Schwarza was the origin of the German family Sternberger.   Andreas Sternberger was born in Schwarza 1592 as a son of Peter Sternberger in Schwarza. The church records before 1640 often have been destroyed in this war. I therefore cannot proof my theory that Johann Hermann Sternberger is a son of Andreas St., who entered the swedish army in Schwarza as a young man between 1630 and 1635.   I see only one chance to progress the knowledge about Johann Hermann St.: The Church records at Pirmasens say, his wife had seven sons. Only two of them are named in this records: Johann Georg and Johann Ludwig. Five sons are missing. So there is the possibility to find descendants and information about their ancestor.   I hope I could give you some additional information about our ancestor Sternberger.   Greetings   Wolfgang Raab from Pirmasens, Germany   From "Ausgewählte Familien und Personen".
