William G. Grice Jr.
William G. Grice Jr., father of the Rev. Dr. William G. Grice III, and the husband of the late Dorothy Ahbe Grice, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2012, following a brief illness at the Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center in Poteau, Oklahoma. He was born on November 27, 1915, in Chicago, and was 96 years old at the time of his passing. Mr. Grice was born and raised in Chicago, and met Dorothy Ahbe, with whom he shared nearly 70 years of marriage, through "The Sprockets" bicycleclub during the late 1930s. During World War II, he served in the Army Corps of Engineers and was responsible for staging supplies in the European Campaign. Following the war, he returned to Des Plaines and lived in the family homestead on Thacker Street until the time of his passing. Throughout his life, Mr. Grice was a self-employed printer. Over the years he was an active member of the Des Plaines Camera, serving in its various offices, the First Congregational Church of Des Plaines, the Des Plaines Lions Club, and as volunteer at Lutheran General Hospital. Mr. Grice is survived byhis son, the Rev. Dr. William G. (Ann) Grice III; four grandsons, Paul R. (Sandy) Grice, William G. Grice IV, Jonathan C. (Anna) Grice and Christopher A. (Ashley) Grice; plus five great-grandchildren, William G. Grice V, Kaitlin Grice, Abigail Grice, Elizabeth Grice and Riley Grice. There will be a visitation from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at the G.L. Hills Funeral Home,745 Graceland Avenue in Des Plaines. Services will be held at First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Des Plaines at 11 a.m. where he will lie in state beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday,January 23, 2012 with interment in Town of Maine Cemetery in Park Ridge. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Des Plaines History Center, Tower Hill Camp & Retreat Center, FirstCongregational Church of Des Plaines, or Ronald McDonald House Charities.
