Annette?s great-grandmother Else Helene LEVYSOHN (1857?1923) was a pianist, trained by Franz Liszt in Weimar, and later invited by George Eliot to visit England. She subsequently taught for many years at Dulwich College in London. Her father was the surgeon and publisher Dr Albert LEVYSOHN (1825?1875), one of the leading lights of the community in Glogau, near Breslau,Lower Silesia, and half-brother of the notorious political agitator Wilhelm LEVYSOHN (1815?1871). Their mutual father Heymann LEVYSOHN (1788?1866) was a wealthy businessman and Chairman of the Jewish communityin the town. Heymann was a particularly egocentric gentleman about whom there are many stories, most of them unflattering. Else?s mother ?Opchen? LILIENHAIN (1829?1926) was another colourful character, running literary evenings in Berlin for the intellectual circles of the scene. She descended from the LILIENHAIN / WIENER familiesand the PRAUSNITZ family of Glogau. Her maternal grandmother was SarahKATZENELLENBOGEN the daughter of Naphtali Lazarus HIRSCH (KATZENELLENBOGEN) (1750?1823), the author of many books on Judaism and Chief Rabbi of the Upper Rhine. He descends from a long line of Rabbis, the Jewish aristocracy whose roots are claimed to be traced to King David (seechart).
