Johann attended the Lutheran School at Alma and stayed at the home of Mary Ringel. On weekends he came on foot to visit his parents and returned by the first of the week. He was confirmed at the lutheran Church in alma, April 14, 1879.
As he grew to manhood he purchased a farm and almost and almost had it paid for when he made a trip to Germany in the fall of 1892 to visit his sister, Anna Herrin, who was given to an Aunt and Uncle at the age of three. It was there that he met Taulke Margareth Siefken and on 4 Feb 1893 he brought her back to become his bride. A sister, Gebke Katherina Siefken, came with them and passed away six years later. Johann and Taulke were married 11 Mar, 1893, at Wells Creek Evangelical Church. Mrs. pageler's father was one of the founders of this church and Mr. and Mrs. Pageler donated and helpted toward the building of the present church which was finished 1 Dec 1900.
Johann and Taulke's three room house was rebuilt in the fall of 1905 by August Peters and Richard Meyer, of Alma. This house is the last house in the northwest vcorner of Kaw Township. The farm is now owned by Fred and Adolf. The large mabel tree was planted by Mr. Pageler's father in 1895. There was a sawmill near a ferry not far away. There were Gypsies living at the end of th woods who stole chickens, horses and wine out of his cellar. To the west an aged couple by the name of Prine lived on a ranch. Mrs. Prine always smoked a pipe. To the west of the farm is Freemount Hill, it was there that the Indians fled across the river and said, "Way Me Go" after which Wamego was named.
Many of the settlers and their children who came from the old country, became ill with fever and some died of home sickness. Mrs. Pageler never talked English but could read the English paper in German. She always knitted stockings for the children. Johann sold corn for 14 cents per bushel at Wabaunsee. The 1903 flood was a disaster to many farmers along the Kaw River. That same year the Pageler's attended the World's Fair at Omaha and visited her brother, George Siefken, who worked in a mill there. In 1904, DR O.E. Webb organized the Paxico Telephone Co. by selling shares to the farmers. The lines were completed in Dec of 1904.
