The first Mennonite family to live here was the Eymann family. It contained about 200 acres of farm land and meadow. The Donnesberg is the highest mountain (2,320 Ft) of the Haardt Mountains of the palatinate in what is now south central Germany. The farm remained in the hands of the Krehbiel family for 100 years. The grandson of the original purchaser dived it with his brother-in-law Jakob Danner, before the heirs were forced to sell the farm to the state in 1854 when it became a park. He and his wifewere cousins. Katharina was his 4th cousin and immigrated to the U.S. and lived out his life in Iowa. Johannes was a farmer. Records indicate that Katharina died in Ill. and apparently went there after the death of Johannes.</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>Johannes and his wife were both born in the same farm village of Weierhof and lived in the house of "Galles am Berg" following their marriage. In 1844 they moved to Upper Bavaria where other Mennonite families had started a community. they purchased a farm called Waspelhof (after a previous owner) consisting of 107 acres in Kleinschwabenhausen, Eichofen, District of Dachau. In 1851 when their oldest son was of military age the family decided to move to America. They came on the ship "Splendid" in August 1851 and settled in Lee County, Iowa. Johannes wa a deacon in the church in Eichstock and again in the Zion Mennonite Church of Donnellson, Iowa. Valentine also ran a mill at Alta Mills. Valentine was selected to be the minister of the Mennonite Church in Halstead, Kansas on March 28, 1875 and was ordained that same day. He was ordained an Elder on January 9, 1876. When the First Mennonite Church of Christian was started by members of the halstead Church he also became the minister threrin 1878 and served there until his death. They had ten children ( 4 sons and 6 daughters) and he had eight children (3 sons and 5 daughters) by his wife Kathryn. He was known to have a keen seanse ofhumor and was soft spoken and calm. Members of the family as small children were always in awe of their Grandma and her chicken killing. He was known as a responsible person who was generous with his time and the few dollars that he could put together. His word was his binding contract. He was a deacon for a number of years in their church and served on the school board. Education was important to him. He was a skilled carpenter and mechanic and a successful wheat farmer.
