I found this grave in a plowed farm field about a mile from my home in Smithton IL. After researching the internet, I discovered a genealogy site that showed there was a Catharine (spelled Catherine on the site) Eyman who was the daughter of Daniel and Sally (Wair) Eyman. It gave her approximate year of birth as around 1832, which is consistent with the birth year inscribed on her tombstone. The genealogy site also indicated Daniel was born in Hardy County VA (now part of West Virginia) on 21 December 1793, was a farmer in St. Clair County IL (most likely in Smithton Township since that iswhere the Catharine's grave is located), and died in Belleville, St Clair County IL on 25 July 1849. Additionally, she had two older brothers (George and Daniel Jr.), two younger brothers (John and Jacob Marion), and three younger sisters (Lydia, Nancy, and Elizabeth). The headstone has been worn due to being exposed to the elements and I couldn't determine her birth month, but I can discern the day as being the 14th. From researching another genealogy site, I discovered that her birth date was actually 14 June 1832 and that she married a Daniel Eyman on 14 December 1851. If you look closely at the tombstone, you can faintly discern, directly below the name (Catharine), it says "Wife of" and then "Danl. Eyman." He was born in Monroe County IL on 15 October 1827, the son of Henry and Catherine Elizabeth (Sites) Eyman, and died in St. Albans, Hancock County IL on 2 March 1900. According to his obituary that I found on a genealogy site, there was a son born to this union in 1853, a John Williams Eyman, who died in infancy. From my research I determined that Catharine and her husband were 2nd cousins, in lieu of 1st cousins, because they shared a same set of paternal great-grandparents(Abraham Eyman Sr and Anna Ruth (Stuckey) Eyman). Both the Daniel Eyman (Catharine's father) and Henry Eyman (Catherine's husband's father) families came to Illinois (St Clair/Monroe Counties) from the same part of Virginia (now West Virginia) and were among the first settlers in the area. I presume the reason that she was buried in this field as opposed to a local cemetery is because her fatherwas buried at that location 4 years earlier. I have no clue as to the cause of her death.
