Other Information:
1. According To W. F. Hoffman, the author of "Polish Surnames: Origins & Meanings", the name "Scigan" probably comes from "scigany" (s~cigany) and/or "sciganka" (s~ciganka). "Scigany" means "hunted, pursued". "Sciganka" is a term for "chasing your opponents in a game to hit one of them with a ball". Also "scigany" in a dialect is "a name of a dance".

2. According to W. F. Hoffman in 1990 there were only 62 people living in Poland who had the name Scigan. 61 were living in the province Jelenia Gora (formerly Hirschberg in Niederschlesien) and 1 in the province Legnica (formerly Liegnitz in Niederschlesien). The distance between the town Jelenia Gora and Kalisz is 200 km. The distance between the town Legnica and Kalisz is 150 km. Mr. Hoffman wrote that he "seldom run[s] across a distribution pattern that's quite that clear".

3. There is also the Polish word "cygan", which means "gipsy". Mr. Hoffman wrote that "scigany"/"Sciganka" is "probably the right derivation".

4. In the church records of Mikstat, the family was called "Scigan" and "Sciganka".
