He was probably born in the village Quelkhorn in the Wilstedt parish near Osterholz-Scharmbeck in Lower Saxony in Germany. His parents were Hinrich and Trine Bolens. (C2)

He took over a newly subdivided plot of marshland in an area called Neu St. Jürgen. It is part of the nearby Worpswede parish. He was a farmer (German: Halbbauer). (C2)

Marriage:
When he was about 24 years old, he married the single Heilke Grimm from Worpswede. The wedding was on the 6th of June 1760 in the Lutheran church in Worpswede. (C2)
Death:
He died at 6 p.m. on the 14th of December 1788 in Neu St. Jürgen from consumption. He was 62 years old. He was buried in the cemetery in Worpswede three days later. (C2)
