Notes for this person
43 N Main St: Historic Business - Schloos Men's Furnishing The Schloos Men's Furnishing store was around back in 1914 and islisted in Brighton directories up until 1962. There were many Schloo'sin Brighton at the time, so it's hard to say if it was a familybusiness, or if one of them was the store owner. Herman Schloo is the oldest brother we know of. He was born in 1871and was married to Emma Schloo. The Brighton Blade reported of a battle in Brighton onJanuary 15th of 1904, when Henry led a group of 30 armed men to seize the former SheriffHackley for control of the Sheriff’s office and to arrest Judge Guthiel for tampering with theballot boxes. In fact, it was Henry Sherman who was the rightful Sheriff and he took officefollowing the “battle”. Histories tell us that Herman was a good sheriff and had three successful termsfollowing the battle. He and his wife also had a residence in Brighton located at 373 South 3rdAvenue. The Schloo family was part of the formation of the Lutheran church, along with other familiar names; the Delvanthal's, Lutz's and Kramer's. The next son, George“Heinrich” Schloo was the first to marry in the new church, when he wed Marie Ehlen on January22, 1902. This information, and census forms lead us to believe that the Schloofamily emigrated from Germany or Russia as others within this church had (the services werespoken in German). Heinrich and Marie had at least four children; Ludwig, Luisa, Karl andAlfred. Karl (Carl) and his wife lived at 49 S. 5th Avenue, where they had two boys, Delford andRoger. Alfred and his mother Marie moved into 49 S. 5th Avenue in 1929 after GeorgeHeinrich's death in 1927. Karl and his son, Roger are later listed as business owners of the Schloo'sclothing store, so it seems that Mr. George“Heinrich Schloo was mostinvolved with the store management. Lastly, we know of John Schloo who was born in 1878. He was married toRosa Schloo and had at least two children; Clara and Martin (othersmay have moved out of the house by the time of this Census record). A1916 farm map lists two parcels of land north of 144th Avenue (splitby Sable/4th Avenue), which were owned by John Schloo and later soldby his wife, Rosa. The store had a long history of being one of the best in men'sclothing and shoes. It was the place to go when looking for a nice men's shirt for work, whichperhaps made it such a longstanding successful store. They also sold men's shoes in thestore, which was a memorable experience. In order to assure optimumfitting, the clerk ran an x-ray machine for your feet. People wouldcome step onto the machine like a weight scale and see the bones intheir toes below them. In its earlier years, the Schloo's had a business partner named GeorgeS. Bender. He was a resident in Brighton with his wife, Marie and children, but they laterleft the Schloo’s to open a 'business up in Fort Collins.
