Obituary in the Rocky Mountain News, Denver, Colorado, July 21, 2007 Morrison man killed in jet ski accident KALISPELL, Mont. — One person has died following an accident onFlathead Lake, authorities said today. Larry Engelken, 58, of Morrison, died yesterday after he was thrownfrom his personal watercraft in the Bigfork Bay area, said Sgt. ErnieFreebury, deputy coroner with the Flathead County Sheriff'sDepartment. The incident occurred after Engelken collided with another personalwatercraft, Freebury said. Engelken was among a group of friends fromColorado who were vacationing in the area. Engelken was taken to Kalispell Regional, where he later died. It appears the cause of death was blunt force trauma, Freebury said. It does not appear alcohol or criminal negligence played a part in theaccident, Freebury said. The case was being investigated by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parksand the Flathead County Coroner's Office. Larry Engelken, 58, of Morrison, Colo., died of blunt force traumaThursday after he was thrown from his personal watercraft in theBigfork Bay area, said Sgt. Ernie Freebury, deputy coroner with theFlathead County sheriff's department. Engelken was among a group of friends from Colorado who werevacationing in the area. Officials say three from the group wereriding abreast with Engelken in the middle when he suddenly turned hiscraft to the right. To avoid a collision, the man riding to Engelken'sright also turned abruptly, which rolled the bottom of his watercraftout of the water. Engelken's watercraft hit the exposed hull and both men were throwninto the water, officials said. The men were unable to get Engelken to shore and called for help. The Flathead Lake Lodge sent its sailboat out to aid Engelken. Anemergency room doctor who was a guest at the lodge was on board. Thedoctor performed CPR on Engelken on the sailboat and on the helicopterthat took him to Kalispell Regional Medical Center. Engelken waspronounced dead about 90 minutes after the 3:45 p.m. collision. It does not appear alcohol or criminal negligence played a part in theincident, Freebury said. Engelken On July 19th, 2007, Larry J. Engelken earned the wings his family andfriends knew he already had during his brief time with us. Larryearned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering fromKansas State University. He worked for two global engineering designfirms, including Black and Veatch in Kansas City. He was a foundingmember of a local and global firm, Convergent Group, and he laterbecame a successful, self-employed entrepreneur, developer, andphilanthropist. His hobbies included traveling, sampling/sharing foodand fine wines (the more, the merrier), his Harley, and his family. Heis survived by his loving wife, Holly, his children, Amanda, Dustin,Devin, Andrea, Mike, and Lori, as well his grandchildren Ashley,Caleb, and Keegan, with two more grandkiddos expected any day. He isalso survived by his mother, Pat, eleven siblings, and too many otherrelatives to even count! Larry exuded life and kindness, graciousness,and generosity. He was a voracious learner and an incredible mentor.He made lifelong friends wherever he went and was larger than life. Weknow he is now the busiest Angel in Heaven; just try to stop him! Hewould tell everyone to love and cherish your friends and family everyday and never miss an opportunity to spend time together. Also, besure to TELL them as often as possible, in words, deeds, and thelittle things, how much they mean to you. As Larry would say, lookingdirectly into your eyes, "Salud". A Celebration of Life will takeplace at the residence at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24th. In lieu offlowers, the family requests that you make a donation in Larry's nameto a charity of your choice.
