The territory of Alsace formed part of the duchy of Alemannia, one ofthe four original provinces of Germany which survived as an autonomousentity until it was defeated by the early Carolingian Franks in746/47, at which time the Alemannic dukes were deposed and a largepart of the Alemannic nobility killed at Canstatt, near Stuttgart[1].During the late 7th and early 8th centuries, dukes are recorded inAlsace, although it is supposed that they were subordinate to thedukes of Alemannia. Alsace formed part of the kingdom of Lotharingia under the division ofthe Frankish empire agreed at the treaty of Verdun in 843. TheAnnales Bertiniani record that Lothar II King of Lotharingia investedhis son Hugues with the duchy of Alsace in 867[2]. Under the 870treaty which divided Lotharingia between the East and West Frankishkingdoms "…in Elisatio comitatus II…" were assigned to Ludwig II "derDeutsche" King of the East Franks[3]. However, Charles II "le Chauve"King of the West Franks invaded Alsace after the death of King Lotharand Duke Hugues was obliged to submit to him. The two Alsatiancounties (identified as Sundgau and Nordgau) do not appear to havebeen considered as part of the duchy of Upper Lotharingia after itsformation in the mid-10th century. It is likely that Alsace at thattime formed part of the duchy of Swabia. Primary sources name theGrafen im Nordgau and Grafen im Sundgau as counts in Alsace betweenthe 9th and 11th centuries. After that time, the counties of Egisheimand Dachsburg emerged as the primary counties in Alsace. The countyof Ferrette (Pfirt) developed in southern Alsace in the early 12thcentury. |
