Medieval Lands by Charles Cawley, Foundation for Medieval Genealogy THIERRY de Lorraine, son of THIERRY II Duke of Lorraine & his secondwife Gertrude de Flandre ([1099/1101]-Gravelines 17 Jan 1168). He isnamed in the Cartulaire de Saint-Bertin, which also specifies hisparentage[376]. After the election of Guillaume de Normandie as countof Flanders in Mar 1127, nobles in Gent invited Thierry d'Alsace tointervene. Orderic Vitalis records that he captured Lille, Furnes andGent[377]. He was recognised as count at Bruges 30 Mar 1128[378].After Count Guillaume died from injuries received at the battle ofAalst 28 Jun 1128, Thierry was generally accepted as THIERRY I Countof Flanders. He went to Palestine in 1138, and joined Louis VII Kingof France in Jun 1147 on the Second Crusade[379]. The AnnalesBlandinienses record that he returned to Palestine in 1157 and in1164[380], taking part in campaigns with Baudouin III King ofJerusalem during the earlier visit[381]. The Flandria Generosaspecifies that "Theodericus comes monarchiam Flandrie" was buried in"cenobio Watinensi"[382]. Nodetails are known about her parentage so speculation about the precisenature of the family relationship between husband and wife ispointless. According to OrdericVitalis, King Henry broke off the marriage "making use of threats andpleas and an enormous quantity of gold and silver"[388]. Bothpassages in Orderic Vitalis refer only to a betrothal, but a marriagemust have taken place otherwise a papal annulment would have beenunnecessary. Her father supported her husband against his uncle HenryI King of England, indignant that the latter retained the dowry of hisother daughter Alix, married to King Henry's son who had been drownedin the Blanche Nef [White Ship] in 1120[389].
