Theodora war eine Tochter des Sebastokrators Andronikos Komnenos und seiner Frau Eirene. Außerdem war sie die Nichte des byzantinischen Kaisers Manuel I. Komnenos. Heinrich II. heiratete die fünfzehnjährige Theodora, als er von Der Niederlage des Zweiten Kreuzzugs nach Konstantinopel floh.
