Er wird zum ersten Mal 1284 zusammen mit seinem Vater genannt. Gemeinsam beurkunden sie die Verfügung ihres Onkels und Bruders, des späteren Ordenskomturs Gerlachs (II.), über den Zehnt in Elsoff zu Gunsten des Deutschen Ordens.
Bei der Entgegennahme eines Waldecker Lehens im Jahre 1307 führte er erstmalig die Bezeichnung Ritter, während sein Bruder Godebert (V.) die Bezeichnung "famulus" (=Edelknecht, Knappe) bei ihrer nächsten gemeinsamen Urkunde Im Frühjahr 1308 beibehalten hat.
