Er war der Sohn von Sancho II. und Urraca Fernández, der Tochter Sancho I. Er ist auch als García II. Sánchez der Zitternde Bekannt.
Er heiratete Jimena, Tochter des Grafen Fernando von Cea und Elvira. Unter ihren Kindern waren der nachfolgende König Sancho III. und Urraca, die spätere zweite Frau von Alfons V. von Kastilien.
