Am 11. April 1940 wurde Lódz von den deutschen Besatzungsbehörden zu Ehren des deutschen Generals und NSDAP-Mitglieds Karl Litzmann (1850–1936), dessen 3. Garde-Infanterie-Division in der Kesselschlacht bei Lódz im ersten Winter des Ersten Weltkriegs siegreich gekämpft hatte, in Litzmannstadt umbenannt. Zum 15. Februar 1941 änderte sich auch die Bezeichnung des Regierungsbezirkes Kalisch inLitzmannstadt.
