Along with them came numerous children and their families. They settled in Grand Forks from 1907-1909 or 1910 then moved to St Francis, Kansas. Any information is helpful. Thank you kindly, Jennifer Kuhlman Brown &&&&&&&&&&&&& This Jennifer got most of this from our Cheyenne County History book, in the story written by the daughter -Gertrude Zweygardt, of Fred Walz and Eva Schmierer-Knorr. Here is the family part of it--- "Fred Walz was born January 24, 1891, in Neudorf, South Russia, son of the late Christoff Walz (1848) and Frederika (Schniple, 1856) Raile. He was baptized February 3, 1891, and confirmed into the Lutheran Faith, in May 1906. In 1907 he emigrated with his parents and relatives to the United States. They first made their home in Grand Forks, North Dakota, for two years, after which they homesteaded eight and one-half miles northwest of St. Francis, Kans. Fred was the eighth child in a family of eleven children. His sisters and brothers are as follows: Christoff Walz, half brother; Christina, half sister, (Mrs. Jacob Fischer); Carolina (Mrs. George Krien); Kathrina (Mrs. Henry Wolf -Mrs, Henry Peters); Margaret (Mrs. Fred Knorr); Eva (Mrs. Jake Zweygardt); Lena (Mrs. Bennett Anderson); Jake; Lydia (Mrs. Henry Lampe); and Rose (Mrs. Web Scheller). Two of the children died, Barbara, age 2; and Fred, age 6. Eva Walz nee (Schmierer-Knorr) was born February 20, 1891, in Neudorf, South Russia. She was the daughter of the late John Schmierer and Elizabeth (Burgardt-Knorr) (1870), an adopted daughter of Jacob Knorr (1864). Jacob was a chartere(d) member of the Salem Lutheran Church. She was the only child of this family. At the age of seven, she emigrated with her Mother and relatives to the United States, where she made her home eight miles northwest of St. Francis, Kans. She was baptized as an infant, three days after birth, and later confirmed in the Lutheran Faith." The next story is of Harvey E. Walz and Lucille R. Ortiz, the grandparents of Jennifer who wrote the letter. Years ago I asked Gertrude about the name of her mother, she said she always wondered too, but her mother would have slapped them if they had asked anything about it. So this is what her mother wanted them to know-- now we know how these puzzles start, well, maybe. According to my notes, they all came in 1907, but my notes aren't always right either, making more puzzles I am afraid.
