!Called Louis. He remained at home until fourteen years of age, when he was sent to Ft. Wayne, Ind. and remained in school for 3 1/2years. Then went to Chicago, and on Twelfth street, engaged in the grocery business, until July 13, 1876, when he came to Lombard and engaged in the grocery business, first associating with A.E. Hill. Later purchasing his interest and carried on the business for sometime. His brother Frederick Marquardt also entered this business and the firm was then known as the Marquardt Brothers Store, carrying general merchandise. Soon after Fred became the Sr. Partner, with Louis the Jr. operating a warehouse and large elevator doing business in grain, coal, bran and feed in general. A barn still stands west of Park Ave., and south of St. Charles Road, along the North Western Railroad tracks. Frederick and Louis Marquardt first lived in adjacent homes at the South West corner of Main St. and St. Charles Road. later the Louis Marquardt Family lived above the store in the Marquardt building, which still stands on the west side of Park Ave., along the Chicago Northwestern Right of Way. Frederick Marquardt acquired the land on the east and west sides of Elizabeth Street, between St. Charles Road and the Chicago Northwestern Right-of way. (These houses no longer exist.) The family moved in the home he built where now is the present location of the Jewell Tea Co. later Theodore F. Marquardt, his son, occupied the property which is now the present site of the Marquardt Professional Building. He died in his son's home at 31 E. Maple, Lombard, IL
