{geni:about_me} • pioneer • • Samuel Marshall, Sr., the first pioneer and permanent settler ofScioto County, was born June 29, 1750, in Washington County, Penn. Hisfather came to the Northwestern Territory to seek a future home forhis family. He came down the Ohio in company with General AnthonyWayne, who was sent out by President Washington to conclude a treatywith the Indians. In February, 1796, Mr. Marshall loaded his goodsinto his pirogue and moved up to a point about three miles above theScioto River, and nearly opposite the mouth of Tygart's Creek, wherehe concluded to locate. He built his house out of pickets or puncheonssplit out of the body of a tree, three or four inches thick, and aswide as the tree would make. He dug a trench in the ground and setthese pickets in so as to include a space of eighteen or twenty feetsquare and covered with the same material. He banked the earth uparound the outside, to keep out the cold winds, and used the groundfor a floor. Into this he moved his family, consisting of fourchildren, himself and wife. Two of his daughters had married inManchester and remained behind. Those who came with him were Jessie,Samuel, Polly and Salina. This was the first house built and occupiedin Scioto County. When (if it could be called a house) in the month ofFebruary, 1796, there was not another human being, either white, blackor red, in Scioto County. From Keyes's history of the Marshall family, this summing up is taken: "We claim for Samuel Marshall the credit ofbeing the first settler in Scioto County who came here with theintention of making this his permanent home. That he built the firstcabin and raised the first crop of corn; that the first person marriedin the county was his daughter, and that the first child that was bornin the county was his child." The first child born as above mentioned, was Fanny, who, on reaching womanhood, married George Skunkwilder. Shewas born in the year 1797. Probably the first pioneer and permanentsettler in the Lower Scioto Valley was Samuel Marshall, who came downthe Ohio River in company with Gen. Anthony Wayne, in the fall of1795. After the Treaty of Greenville, in February, 1796, Mr. Marshallselected a claim about three miles above the mouth of the Sciotonearly opposite the mouth of Tygart's Creek. There he built his cabinof puncheons and installed his family, consisting of a wife and fourchildren."
