In 1700, the son of Don Toribio Alatorre, Don Miguel Alatorre y la Cerda (born circa 1671) was named Count of Lerida by King Charles II prior to Charles’ death in November 1700. Lerida (today called Lleida) is in the Catalonia territory, which borders southern France, and sits about 100 miles west of Barcelona and the Mediterranean Sea.
Likely, this title was bestowed due to the successful management of the additional territories that the family acquired, and the resulting taxes and duties that were paid to the King. Much like a family business, when an expansion isneeded, a senior, experienced family member is put in charge, and when the new venture is successful, the benefits are bestowed back upon the one who oversaw and administered the operation.
