Isabella wurde im Frühjahr 1200 in jungen Jahren mit dem etwa vierzig Jahre älteren Hugo IX. von Lusignan verlobt. Doch der König von England Johann Ohneland, welcher als Herzog von Aquitanien derLehnsherr sowohl der Lusignans als auch Isabellas war, verliebte sich in das junge Mädchen und heiratete sie am 24. August 1200 in Bordeaux.
