Generation 1
- Herman J. Krull-1[1, 2, 2] was born on 12 Mar 1871 in Morton Grove,Illinois[1, 3, 4, 5]. He died on 23 Apr 1942 in Lake Forest, Lake County, Illinois[1].
Notes for Herman J. Krull: General Notes:
Herman, Clothilde & Walter moved back to Dillenburg, Germany around 1905-1906. When WWI was coming, Clothilde got scared that Walter would get drafted. They came back late in 1913 (possibly 1910, as they are onthe manifest for the Graf Waldersee from Hamburg to NY). Walter got drafted in the U.S. army, but did not fight in Europe.
In the 1900 Census, Herman, Clothilde and Walter lived at 147 Sheffield Ave, unit 135. There appear to be 3 units total (a 3-flat?), units 133, 134, and 135. John Krull and family lived in unit 133. The birth years in the census are appropriate for this to be Herman's brother, his wife and son. According to a conversation with Richard Krull's wifeLiving Krull, April 3, 2005, Richard remembered going to his grandparent's house on Sheffield. There would be sausages hanging in the window, and chickens in the back yard.
Herman was a Saloonkeeper, …but we served food. He owned a tavern. At the time of his death, though, he was working as a machinist for Chicago Surface Lines, where his son Walter was also employed.
Clotilde Charlotte Hafer daughter of Johann Hafer and Katharine Koenig[2, 6, 7, 8] was born on 19 Sep 1873 in Dillenburg, Hesse, Germany[7,9, 10, 11, 12]. She died on 29 Oct 1936 in Cook, Illinois, United States[13].
Notes for Clotilde Charlotte Hafer: General Notes:
Clothilde was very clear in communicating that she was Hessian, not German. She spoke German and French, and referred to her husband as "plow (sp?) Deutche" - a "plow-German" or common German.
Herman J. Krull and Clotilde Charlotte Hafer were married on 23 May 1894 in Cook County, Illinois[7, 14]. They had the following children:
