John Gye was born circa 1503 in Devon, England. He was the son of John Gye and Elizabeth Spencer. He married Mary Prowse, daughter of Thomas Prowse of Sandford and Joan Baynton, in 1509 in Devon, England; Married as a child. He and Mary Prowse claimed the lands of Thomas Prowse in Poughill, Dodderidge, Ilsington, and elsewhere, in 1516 in Devon, England. "Thomas Abraham, son and heir of John Abraham, to John Gye and Mary, his wife, a close end garden in Dodbrooke, which Thomas and John Blackealler and John Irysche, his feoffees, granted to John Gye and Mary, his wife, on the Feast of St. Andrew, 16 Henry VIII - 30 November 1524, Feast of St. Nicholas 16 Henry VIII, Seal." He died on 14 August 1536 in Devon, England. His estate was probated between 1538 and 1540 in 29/30 Henry VIII, Plympton, Devon, England; Inq.p.m. For one John Gey of Devon. "The parchment on which this proceeding was recorded in the reign of Henry VIII is eaten away along two borders and stained in the upper center; even so, enough of the text is decipherable to show that: a. the deceased, with his wife Mary, was seized of the manors of Poughill and Doddridge, with lands in South Tawton, Crediton, Upton Hylyon, Chawleigh, Cheriton FitzPaine, South Affeton, Ermington, Kingsbridge, and Alyington, all in county Devon; b) in 1520 when the said Mary had attained full age, they enfeoffed one Wm. Gilberd with certain of the lands for the use of their heirs; c) the said John Gey died on 14th Aug. 1536 and that his son and heir was Robert Gey then aged five years and more."
