"I give, devise, and dispose of all my estate, real and personal (excepting what shall be necessary for the payment of my just debts and funeral charges) in the following manner. I give to my wife, Hellen Brockman, all my property both real & personal conditioned, that is to say my said wife is to support and maintain my children, namely, Lewis, Mary Ann, Adelia, Amelia, Albert, Alvina, Caroline, Lena, Henry and Hannah Brockman, until they shall become of suitable age to support and maintain themselves. It is my will that in case my oldest son, Lewis Brockman, stays at home with his mother (my said wife) and helps to support and maintain the rest of my said children as before stated, that he have and I hereby bequeath unto him my real estate, namely the W 1/2 of SE 1/4, and the SW 1/4 of NE 1/4, Section 31, Township 17 North, Range 1 East, condition that he, my said son Lewis, is to support and maintain my said wife during her natural life or as long as she remains my widow. And I hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my friend Fred Geisler the sole executor of this my last will and testament." ­ Christoph Brockmann, 28 December 1872.

"Since he died two months later on 21 February 1873, one wonders if he had a premonition or if he did this after becoming ill. Another granddaughter, Myrtle Benson, said he had been to Tomah on a cold wet winter day and he caught a cold. She assumed he probably died of pneumonia. If he wrote this will after becoming ill, it was still two months before he died, so one cannot help but wonder." ­Mildred Hutchinson
