Richard Lemke was the uncle of Catherine Ann (Lemke) Sahm--the following newspaper articles concerning Mr. Lemke state that he came to this country when he was 11 with his parents--one of the Lawrence cousin's (Herman Lemke, son of ?John Lemke)--was born 1859 in Iowa--perhaps older brother John came over to this country first--or just possible error.

On with Richards interview, etc.

Married 54 Years

(in this article Lemke was spelled Lempke through out the article--all other articles refer to Lemke so I have taken the liberty of transcribing Lemke instead of Lempke--supposedly to save confusion but after this introduction whose confused about what!)

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lemke will celebrate their fifty-fourth wedding anniversary at their home in Effingham Friday. Mr. Lemke was born in Prussia, Germany, July 25, 1853. There he grew up on his father's farm and was educated in the district school,, until when 11 years of age he came to America with his parent and located on a farm near St. Louis, Mo. The family later moved to a farm In Iowa. He remembers the voyage from the old country which took them seven weeks and three days on the ocean and many passengers were very seasick. Mr. Lemke speaks four different kinds of languages--Dutch, high and low German and English. Mrs. Lemke was born February 12, 1861 on a farm near Fort Madison, Iowa and moved with her parents to a farm near Lawrence, Nebraska at the age of 19 years.

Mrs. Lemke, whose maiden name was Miss Elizabeth Brockman, was united in marriage to Mr. Lemke June 7, 1881, at St. Steven's (sic) Catholic Church two and one-half miles south of Lawrence, Nebraska. They came to Kansas March 01, 1901, and have since been residents of the state. They are a wonderful couple for their ages, and are very fond of relating reminiscences of the old days when the families crossed the plains and traveled far and near in quest of riches and adventure.

Mr. and Mrs. Lemke own a comfortable home in town and 160 acres of land south of Effingham where their son, Martin Lemke, and family had been living for several years, until last March when their grandson, Walter Noll, took possession. Although 82 years of age, Mr. Lemke has chopped and helped to saw 23 loads of wood this winter. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Lemke, five of whom are living, Mrs. Joe Noll, Martin Lemke, George Lemke all of Effingham; Mrs. John Regan, Atchison, and Mrs. Catherine Kramer of Winchester and 24 grandchildren. The Lemkes and all of their families living here are members of the St. Ann's Catholic Church which was the faith of both of their families. Mrs. Lemke is a very active worker in the Altar Society and is one of the best quilters.
