THE MANOR OF BROADGATE, otherwise called Brockmans, lies within the bounds of this parish, [Birchington], and extends likewise into Monkton; it was part of the possessions of Henry Beaufort, duke of Somerset, and on his attainder in the 8th yea r of King Edward IV. [1469] came to the crown, whence it was granted to John Brockman, esq. of Witham, in Essex, to hold by the same tenure and services as it was held in the 1st year of his reign, and he died possessed of it in the 16th yea r of King Henry VII. anno 1500, as was found by the inquisition then taken.
