Jacob Heller was a First Lieutenant, 7th Co., 5th Battalion, Northampton Militia and then Captain, 3rd Co, 2nd Battalion, Northampton Militia, during the Revolutionary War from 1777-1783. (1st Pa. Arch IX, pages. 340-49 and 2nd PA Arch. XIV, p. 574) Classes 1-8 of the Northampton Militia were called into service between July 28, 1777 and Jan 9, 1778. He is recognized as a Patriot by the DAR.
Jacob took the oath of allegiance Aug 27, 1777 (No. 158) and again Oct 11, 1785 (No. 385). (Mss. Rec. 1767-78, 225-239)
He inherited land in Plainfield Twp from Simon. In 1773, he built a saw-mill in Plainfield.
In 1786, he was Assessor for Plainfield, and from 1794 to 1796, County Commissioner.
According to the First Census of the U.S., taken 1790, Jacob was the head of the household residing in Plainfield Township, Northampton County. There were 2 males age 16 or older, 4 males under age 16, and 7 females in residence.
He is buried in Plainfield Cemetery in Wind Gap, next to his wife, Susannah, and other family members.
Jacob left a will. He was living in Plainfield Township at this time. He had considerable wealth and property. He gives his second wife, Hannah, two gardens and a house with about 5 acres of land, furnishings, a cow and the sum of $150 to be paid to her annually. He owned 5 contiguous tracts of land in Plainfield & Bushkill Twp., totalling 920 acres and 73 perches. He names his brother Simon of Hamilton Township and his son Jacob Heller of the Borough of Easton as executors. It took 27 years after his death for his estate to be settled.
