Asa and Elizabeth Hight and families are listed on U.S. Census in 1850 in
BOT H Indiana and Ohio.
Springfield Township, Williams County Ohio U.S. Census w as taken in
September 1850. Lists the following family members at that resid ence:
Asa, Elizabeth and children: Hester, Adam, Nancy, Kesiah, Sara, Martha
and Asa. Note: These are all children who were born in or after 1830
(the younger children).
Wayne Township, Allen County Indiana U.S. census was taken on Jan. 4,
1851 and lists the following family members:
All of those listed on the Ohio census - EXCEPT FOR SARAH who would have
been 8 years old. She was probably missed in the cenus in Indiana or
was with relatives because it is known she lived to an old age and died
in Kansas.
In addition, all of th e older children are listed: John, Issac, Mary,
Elizabeth (born in 1830, but not on the Ohio census), PLUS a new baby -
Earvin (may be Edwin) who was bor n in November 1850 By 1856, they were
in Jones County, Iowa near Adam and He ster Heyne.
The following is from a book entitled "The Asa Hight Family" by Ne llie
Eva Woods Whedon - the grandaughter of Asa & Elizabeth. She was the
d aughter of Keziah Cornelia Hight Woods - sister of Hester Hight Heyne:
"Asa Hi ght, son of Mrs. Henry Dill by her first husband (Asa Hight,
Sr.). It is unk nown if Asa had any siblings by the name of Hight.
Probably within a year af ter the marriage of Asa and Elizabeth Shoe
(Shewey) they left Green Co., and moved to Williams Co., OH, as their
eldest childwas born there July 13, 1824. They settled in a part of
Williams Co., that later became Defiance Co., OH. The 'History of
Williams County, Ohio' pub. in 1882 states the following under
Springfield Township:
'The first mail route in the township was the on e from
Defiance to Evansport, and north to some town in Michigan.
Asa Hight w as the mailcarrier, and, as the roads were bad,
he carried the mail on horseba ck.'
"Records in Bryan (County seat of Williams Co.) show that Asa Hight
pur chased 80 acres of land in Springfield Twp. situated 5 miles S.E. of
Stryker, on 6 Aug. 1842, and that he and Elizabeth sold it 5 Dec. 1850.
Their son, J ohn P. Hight, purchased 40 acres of land, situated 1 mile
south of his father 's 80 acres, on 4 Dec. 1849, and he and his wife
Susanna, sold it 16 Dec. 185 0.
"About 1851 or 1852 Asa Hight and family left Ohio (perhaps not until
aft er the marriage of their daughter, Elizabeth Ann, to Adam Bechtol,
which was 1 Jan. 1852. Ann and her older sister Mary are the only
children that remain all their lives in Ohio.
TO DO: Obviously - at some point the family had moved from Indiana to
Ohio, leaving the older children behind (to tend the fa rm??????). NEED
TO CHECK THIS FURTHER.
. Where was the family in 1840 ce nsus?
. Check 1850 Ohio Census to see if Adam was in Ohio then. Also check
1840, 1850 in Michigan for Heine and Hight.
