He was ordained as deacon and priest on 29 July 1597 in Exeter, Devon, England. He received the degree of B.A. On 8 July 1599 in Exeter College, Oxford, England. He married Mary Gye, daughter of Robert Gye Gent. and Grace Dowrish, on 28 October 1600 in Ilsington, Devon, England. He received the degree of M.A. On 7 July 1603 in Exeter College, Oxford, England. He was curate from 1606 to 1614 in South Huish, Devon, England. He was rector from 1615 to 1629 in Beaworthy, Devon, England. He was inducted at Silverton by William Cotton, Bishop of Exeter, to the rectory of Beaworthy, on the presentation of Arthur Arscott, Esq., patron of the living, on 30 August 1615 in Devon, England. He was chosen as one of the teachers of the Puritan church that was organized at Plymouth, England in March 1629/30. He emigrated from Plymouth, England, leaving 20 March 1630; He sailed aboard the "Mary and John," one of the ships of Winthrop's fleet. He immigrated to Dorchester, New England, arriving 30 May 1630. He was a minister until his death between 1631 and 1636 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He took the oath as Freeman on 18 May 1631 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. "Mr. Maverick, one of the ministers of Dorchester, in drying a little powder (which took fire by the heat of the fire pan), fired a small barrel of two or three pounds, yet did no other harm but singed his clothes. It was in the new meeting-house which was thatched, and the thatch only blacked a little." He established, as one of two ruling ministers and two deacons, the rules of government for the town of Dorchester in 1633 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He was owner/proprieter of two cows and responsible for forty feet of double-railed fence. He died on 3 February 1635/36 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. According to John Winthrop, "Mr. John Maverick, teacher of the church of Dorchester, died, being near sixty years of age. He was a [blank] man of a very humble spirit, and faithful in furthering the work of the Lord here, both in the churches and civil state." Children of Reverend John Maverick and Mary Gye: Master Samuel Maverick Sr.+ b. 1602 Elias Maverick+ b. bt Jul 1604 - Sep 1604, d. 8 Sep 1684 Another version: The Rev. John Maverick and Rev. John Wareham were chosen as pastors by the congregation before it left England and they came over with these people on the ship "Mary and John." In the list of "Early Ministers of New England," in the Historical and Genealogical Register, his name heads the list. Blake's "Annals of Dorchester" says: "Our people were settled here a month or two before Governor Winthrop and ye ships tht came with him arrived at Charlestown. So that Dorchester Plantation was settled next to ye town of Salem, being before Charlestown or Boston."
