Henry was in the wholesale liquor business with his brother Joseph in Galena, Illinois. This business was started about 1850 and continued until Henry's death. The 1850 census for Vinegar Hill Township, Jo Davies County listed his occupation as "Miner" living in the household Henry, his wife, daughter Mary A., and a 60 year old female "Affer" Pfiffner. It is believed that this was a misspelling of "Eva", Henry's mother. Her age should have been 57. This indicates that she moved to Jo Davies County to live with Henry's family after the death of Josef Anton, the father, in Madison County before 1850. The 1854 City Directory for Galena listed Henry Pfiffner, miner, with his home on 'Jackson near Third'. Joseph Pfiffner, miner, was shown as a boarder in Henry's home. Henry was listed as "Henry Pfinier", age 40, in the 1860 census of Jo Davies County. In addition to his wife and children, living in the household were his mother, Eva "Pfinier", age 67, and presumably his brother August "Pifner". Henry's occupation in this census was listed as "Liquor Merchant" with real estate valued at $4,000.00 and a personal estate valued at $10,000.00.
