September 1941, the Bitter family moved from Washington Street to Alta Vista Street. Later lived at 144 Princeton Place in Dubuque.
He attended Sacred Heart for grade school, St. Mary's Commercial High School for 3 yrs. These were German parishes. St. Patrick's and St Raphael's were Irish parishes. Attended Columbia College now known as Loras College. He was in the Army (World War I) but eh Armistice was signed and he was discharged without having to do battle.

As a young man, he delivered hats on is bicycle. Also worked at a place that made leade handles for children's caskets. Caskets were shipped to the south for black kidss. He was also a rent collector for the Rhombergs. He did not work for Cooper Wagon and Bugy but they were biggest employer in Dubuque. Also worked for National Cash Register.
