Roger I ^er , who died in 926 , was the Count of Laon at the beginning of the x ^th  century .

Family origin is not known, but onomastics suggests a close kinship of the family Hugonides, after the Count Roger of Maine († 900), who could be her uncle. It would be brother Hugh († 900-6), Earl of Bassigny which is son of Hugues city in 881.

We do not know what date he received the county of Laon perhaps as early as the execution of Count Walter of Laon , in 892 , he may have married the widow.

In 922, the Marquis Robertian Robert I ^first revolt against King Charles the Simple and proclaimed himself king. In the spring of 922, the town of Laon is besieged and taken.

He is quoted in 923 , when Count Herbert II of Vermandois occupied the Reims. Concerned about the rising power, local barons, including Roger, called to the king Raoul to their rescue. Raoul put a temporary end to Herbert ambitions, but gave him the town of Peronne , as the latter kept in its jails King Charles the Simple and which could generate at any time an opponent Raoul. Roger died three years later.

After 890, he married Heilwide Friuli, count the widow of Hucbald Ostrevent mother of Raoul I ^st of Vexin . Her marriage to Roger, she gave birth to Roger II († 942), Count of Laon, and probably another son, who was the father of Hugh († 977), Bishop of Beauvais .

Traditionally, this is considered a Heilwide daughter of Eberhard , Marquis of Friuli and Gisèle and thus widow of Hucbald Gouy , Count of Ostrevent and Senlis. But that would mean 850-855 born before ¹ it would have had Roger II at the age of at least 40 years, which is possible, but unlikely. With this timeline, Roger I ^st was born later than 855-860, making him 70 years old when he died in 926 in full operation, also implausible solution ² .

Also another identification is proposed: Helvide, wife of Roger would Hucbald daughter of Gouy and Helvide Friuli. The first husband of this Helvide would Gautier († 892), Count of Laon, which would be the father of Raoul I ^st of Vexin , which probably had a son named Gautier .
