Raoul VIII of Beaumont-au-Maine Raoul VIII Beaumont-in-Maine († 1238 - 1239 ; also named Raoul VI or VII ) is the son of Richard I st Beaumont and Luce Laigle , yet said Vicomte de Sainte-Suzanne and Beaumont . Biography Raoul VIII of Beaumont-au-Maine had replaced his father in 1197 , since he expressly takes this title in an exchange between Étival-en-Charnie and Robert de Chemillé . First he encouraged Arthur I first of Brittany , son of Geoffrey II of Brittany , Duke of Brittany , against John Lackland , his uncle, like other lords Mans, then, as well as the largest number, made his peace with the King of England, endorsed by him Juhel III of Mayenne in the month of October 1201 ; had a letter from the king assuring him that he received him for his lige man , whom he had never thought badly or badly spoken of him, and that, if he had done him any harm, he undertook to repair it to the estimate of the Earl of Lancaster, Pierre de Préaux and Guérin de Glapion 1 . Raoul himself prays the same day the king not to believe those who would have served near him and accept his services. But soon things are changing. Arthur and Philip Augustus , his ally, resume the fight against King John, ensure the possession of Domfront and the Norman Pass to Raoul de Beaumont, which since then and especially after the murder of Arthur by his uncle 2 , is still l ally of the King of France, but keeping as far as possible from struggles and wars. Mr. Bertrand de Broussillon says that this fidelity earned him the lease of the young Guyonnet de Laval , preferably to Guy de Thouars , brother-in-law of Guy VI of Laval. If the lease was formed immediately after the death of Guyonnet in 1201 , it should be attributed to the initiative of Jean-sans-Terre, rather than Philippe-Auguste, who would only have maintained it. Raoul kept him in all cases until the majority of Emma de Laval , sister of Guyonnet 3 , and still led the ost of Laval to the battle of Bouvines , 1214 . In this circumstance, he had renewed the gifts of his family to the abbeys of Couture , Étival and Évron . The Cartulary of Perseigne mistakenly named him Richardin two acts of Robert of Alençon , 1214 - 1215 . At the time of the conquest of Normandy by Philip Augustus, the Viscount of Maine handed over to Domfront , and the King disposed of it several times in favor of his partisans. Raoul paid homage to the king in 1210 , as well as all his other lands. In 1216 , he renewed the king his loyalty oaths and gave his son Richard hostage, promising to make him open squares, probably when he went to the conquest of England with Prince Louis . This expedition, blamed by the pope, attracted excommunication . He returned to Francesick; was absolved, made a vow, in case of cure, to leave for the Holy Land , embarked with the Germans and the Czechs , with Raoul, son of the Earl of Chester , the count of Nevers , Olivier, son of the king from England , the Counts of the March and Bar, was at the siege of Damietta and fell into the hands of the Infidels in 1219 . Raoul, returned to France around 1222 - 1223 , confirmed his alms. On the point of leaving with Louis VIII against the Albigensians , he bought for 300 pounds by the prior of Vivoin the servitude of an annual stay at the priory for his bloodletting; and the more expensive " munitions " where he, his knights and their wives came to take their antics in the establishment, three times a day for three days. It was in 1226 . The same year, he inherited, probably from his mother's chief, Guillaume du Perche , bishop of Châlons , last representative of theRotrou family ; Held as an arbiter to the homage rendered to the king by Jeanne des Roches , Lady of Craon , for the Senechaussee of Anjou , 1227 ; was one of those who declared the decay of Pierre Mauclerc . In 1231 , it is seen among those who complained to the pope of the encroachments of prelates on secular jurisdiction. His pious liberality is innumerable. With the consent of Lucie de l'Aigle , his mother, he gives Saint-Aubin d'Angers the chapel of Raillou , for the salvation of Richard, his father. We see him realize the plan to found an anniversary for Richard, his older brother, and conclude with the chapter of Mans an affair that the wars of time had prevented him from executing: the exchange for a rent of 110 sols from the castle of Bourg-l'Eveque , said Bourg-le-Roi since his father held it from Henry II of England and Richard Lionheart . He gives to the Priory of Vivointhe obligation to provide a man to carry his pot when he went to war, 1205 ; at the priory of Torcé the right of past , 1212 ; at the Priory of the Cards the right to be lodged with dogs and horses. On the occasion of the centenary of the founding of Étival-en-Charnie by his grandfather, he founded his birthday at the abbey, 1209 . Bilard wrongly attributes this act to Richard de Beaumont. William de Beaumont , bishop of Angers , still under English influence, exhorted his brother, in the name of the nobility of his race, to respect the legacy of King Richard in favor of the abbey of Melinais , if vultis vestram nobilitatem and honorem ab infamia evitare (after 1209 ). He did not fail, despite his attachment to the French cause. We see Raoul give to the abbey founded by the kings of England 4 , his rights over the Loir , from Polers to Port Chevache ; at the abbey of Évron , a rent on Sainte - Suzanne ; at the Abbey of La Couture , new advantages at Loué ; in Étival , 10 francs a year on Sainte-Suzanne and Beaumont . In the last years of his life, he contributed effectively to the founding of the Carthusians in the Park of Orcs , since he gave his niece, the Countess of Fiff , a canton of Charnie , and had it confirmed by Saint Louis the creation of this house, 1235 , 1236 . He favored the Friars Minor of Le Mans , approved the sale by the Cistercians of the Abbey of Bellebranche to the Chartreux Park of the place of the Sauvagerie given by him. Main article: Chartreuse du Parc-en-Charnie . In the year of his death, he rewarded Hugues de Juille with the right of justice in all his fiefs. He died on August 11 ( 1237 ), after the obituary of the Carthusians , and was buried at the abbey of Étival-en-Charnie . Main article: Etival-en-Charnie abbey . Dom Villevieille attributes to him deeds passed in 1238 . Lucie, who is his mother, is given for his wife by Father Anselme . Family Raoul had for his wife Agnes , whose family name is not indicated anywhere, but which often appears in the acts of her husband. She lived in 1226 . Pierre-Joseph Odolant-Desnos assumes that Raoul de Beaumont owned the Seigneurie de la Flèche . He is the first of his family, in any case, who bore the title, and as the King of England previously possessed the Arrow, one can believe that it was from them that he obtained this appanage. Under these conditions, the most probable supposition is that a marriage, similar to that of Roscelin's grandfather, may have given him this advantage. Agnes would be a natural daughter of one of the last three kings of England , Henry II of England , Richard or John Lackland , as the bride of Roscelin was the daughter of Henry I st of England 5 . The children of Raoul and Agnès 6 were: Richard II of Beaumont († 17 September1242), who succeeded his father; Raoul de Beaumont , the youngest, but who lived in 1218 7 and perhaps later; Guillaume de Beaumont († ~ 1241 - 1242 ), qualified knight in 1236 , ratifying the gift of Raoul, his brother at Orques Park , and another of the same in the chapter of Saint-Pierre-de-la-Court , 1237 . His name is mentioned in the title of a charter of 1238 , copied for Gaignières 8 . Agnès de Beaumont (° ~ 1225 - x 12 february 1253 - † 9 May 1301 ), viscountess of Beaumont-au-Maine, lady of La Flèche, Fresnay, Sainte-Suzanne, Lude and Château-Gontier, who inherited all his brothers and married on February 12, 1253 Louis de Brienne , son of Jean de Brienne , Prince of Jerusalem, becoming viscount of Beaumont, baron of Sainte-Suzanne. The Beaumont-au-Maine dynasty dies with her. Notes and references ↑ Rimer , Acta publica , t. I , p. 4 , 13, 42. ↑ Traditionally, historians believed he had been murdered, strangled or even the hands of John Lackland , today challenging position. ↑ House of Laval , t. I , p. 55 . ↑ Pierre-Jean Le Corvaisier ( Hist. Of Le Mans Bishops , p. 557) states that the Abbey Mélinais was even founded by Viscount Beaumont in expiation of a murder on the order of Fulk of Mathefelon , Bishop Angers ( 1323 - 1355 ), and Pierre-Joseph Odolant-Desnos more unfortunately still says that this viscount of Beaumont was Raoul VIII . ↑ A certainly wrongly dated charter, published by Bilard, suppose the arrow belonged to a king named Henry in 1202 , which is impossible, since Henry II died in 1189 , and Henry III of England not ascended the throne in 1236 . ↑ M. de Lestang in Maine and Anjou , Article Sillé , says Mathilde, wife of Robert I st Sillé ( 1254 - 1280 ), is the home of Beaumont She could in this case be after that Raoul VIII , which is not proved by any document. ↑ According to an act of Couture (p. 409). ↑ In January 1240 , he was still alive, and confirmed to the Abbey of the Ronceray of Angers possession of tithes of the mill Masidor near the Lude , made by his brother Richard; but he was dead before the latter. His wife is named Marie in a charter by which he confirms, in 1239 , the gifts of his brother Raoul, then deceased.
