Funeral Services for Augusta Mary Thiel, 94, of New Ulm, were held Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002 at 10 a.m. from the Nelsonville Brethren Church with the Rev. Michael Groseclose officiating. Interment was at the National Cemetery in Nelsonville. Serving as pallbearers were Sean Bailey, Charlie Zettel, David Siptak, Milton "Chip" Thiel, Jr., Daryl Brune and Ervin Honish. Honorary pallbearers were her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Born in Nelsonville, Texas, Augusta Mary Slacik was the daughter of Charles and Anna (Zettel) Slacik. She grew up in Nelsonville and attended the Santa Anna School. On Jan. 18, 1944, Augusta and Mr. Ernest Thiel were married with ceremony held at the Nelsonville Brethren Church in Nelsonville. She was a homemaker and worked many years on the farm and doing her gardening. Augusta was a member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church and the Christian Sisters. She enjoyed her cats, crocheting and quilting for her children and grandchildren, and her flowers. In the past few years as her health declined, she mostly enjoyed the times her grandchildren and great grandchildren spent with her. Augusta Mary Thiel died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002 in New Ulm. Survived by her children, son George Thiel and wife Betty of Industry, daughter Elna Brune and husband Leebert of New Ulm, Dr. Milton Thiel and wife Dianna of Livingston; grandchildren George William Thiel, Geoffry Ray Thiel, Sheryl Naumann and husband Jody, Dena Janish and husband Kenneth, Daryl Brune, Pam Bailey and husband Sean, Milton "Chip" Thiel Jr. and wife Stephanie, Mary Thiel; great grandchildren Laramie and Makaela Naumann, Reid Gabriel and Canute Janish; Aunt Frances Lola of Needville; sisters-in-law Laura Mae Slacik and Cinata Slacik, both of New Ulm; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by her parents Charles and Anna Zettel (sic); husband Ernest Thiel; sister Minnie Lischka Sonnenberg; brothers Willie, Charlie and Alfred Slacik.
