Baptism record: In the year 1846 on April 1 early at 6 o'clock was born and baptized on the same day at one o'clock: Wilhelm Ernst. The parents are: Jakob Ratz, citizen and farmer here and his wife Katharina Gorenflo. Witnesses and Godparents: 1) Ernst Ratz, citizen and farmer here and his wife Christina Mahler; 2) ___ Franz Gorenflo citizen and farmer here and his wife Ernestine nee (Borell?). On May 17, 1867, the Steamer Saxonia docked in New York, New York. On board was Wilh. Ratz, aged 20, from Germany. He was a sailor. The name, age, and country fit his profile, but not sailor occupation, unless he came in exchange for work as a sailor. The Saxonia had 819 passengers, and 679 of them were Germans. Wilhelm is listed as passenger #576. P. H. Haack was the captain. The ship left from Hamburg. From a source unknown I have noted that Wilhelm bought his property from Saunders after 1874. In 1914 the land is still in the name of Wilhelm. His widow died in 1915, so I am assuming she is the owner of the land in 1914. June 29, 2000 - Gerald Miller at 9791 Buckhart Rd. in Rochester, Illinois bought his house from Tina Ratz 26 years ago. It's the same house of which I have a picture in my very old photos. At the top of my photo is handwritten something like "Our place in Buckhart." (Photo temporarily not handy to check exact wording.) Tina Ratz's address is listed as: Pahrump, NV. Her phone number is (775)751-2043. William lived in Illinois for 43 years at the time of his death. His obituary states he was from Karlsruhe, Baden, but his baptism record is in Friedrichstal, Baden. Perhaps he moved to Karlsruhe for work when he was older? On the 1870 Illinois census he is still single and living with Jacob and Mary Miller in Cooper Twp., Sangamon Cty. At the time of the 1900 census, his mother-in-law resided with him and his family. She was 70 years old. William had been in America for 33 years at the time of the census. He owned his home. 94 was the "number of farm schedule". From Modern Woodmen of America: William Ratz joined Modern Woodmen of America on March 26, 1890. He belonged to Camp No. 510 located in Rochester, Illinois. There was additional information about him and his family history on his original application, but those no longer exist in their files. He applied for citizenship in Sangamon County, Illinois, on February 10, 1887. On April 18, 1890, his citizenship was granted. Obituary: Ratz - Died at 5 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, July 20, 1910, at his residence, four and one-half miles east of Rochester, of cerebral apoplexy, William E. Ratz, aged 64 years, 3 months and 20 days. The funeral arrangements will be made later. Mr. Ratz was born in Baden, Germany, April 1, 1846, and came to this country in 1867, where he has since resided. He was a charter member of Rochester Camp No. 510, Modern Woodsmen of America. He has many friends in this county. Decedent is survived by two daughters, the Misses Alma and Gertrude Ratz and three sons, Harry C., Edward and George W. Gatz. Illinois State Journal, July 21, 1910, page 6. Married by Pastor P. G. Bell of Grace Lutheran Church in Springfield. Source - marriage certificate. He may also have had another brother named Chris. Rotz (Ratz?). Source - 1877 Village and Country Directory for Sangamon County, Illinois. At the time of his death his son, George, was still a minor. Guardianship case #3225 for George was filed in Sangamon County, Illinois. History of Sangamon County: Page 862 of History of Sangamon County (1881) - The township of Cooper was so named in honor of the Rev. John Cooper, one of the early settlers and most prominent men of the township. Page 864 - The 1st interments made in what is now Oak Hill Cemetery were before the land was in market by the United States government; the first one being that of Mr. A. Giger, son of Henry and Nancy Giger, August 1, 1823.....From the year 1823 to 1876 it was known as Cooper grave yard. Page 865 - Cooper Township is "emphatically a temperance town. It has never had in it a saloon." "A Good Templar Lodge was organized February 16, 1881, with the following named charter members: .... Charles Schwartz.... The Lodge was given the name of Buck Hart Lodge No. 295, I. O. G. T. It is now in quite a flourishing condition, with regular weekly meetings in the Buck Hart Methodist Episcopal Church." From the Lincoln Library, "Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Sangamon County", volume 2, page 979: Rochester No. 510, Rochester. Chartered 1888. Charter members, 9. Members, 1911, 119. What this is referring to is the Modern Woodmen of America, of which Edward was 1 of 9 charter members. In 1911 their membership was 119. Expenses from Wilson Park Funeral Home: casket - $150; enbalming - $10; hearse - $10; flowers - $12.50; express - 40 cents. Total - $182.90. Date on paperwork is July 22, 1910. In June, 2006, he was certified as an Illinois Prairie Pioneer for living in Sangamon County since 1867. Taufpaten: - Ernst & Christina (Mahler) Ratz - Franz & Ernestine (Borell?) Gorenflo
