Son of John W. & Ruth A. Sturdy. Also he has a brother, whose name is difficult to read. His father was from West Virginia. His mother was from Illinois. They lived next door to the family of William E. & Mary D. (Schwartz) Ratz. Source - 1910 Illinois census. 1920 census indicates his father was born in Virginia. He was a farmer. Online death records give his father's date of death in Rochester as September 11, 1923. The same records give his mother's date of death in Springfield as August 6, 1930. Mother's obituary: Mrs. Ruth Sturdy of Rochester, died at St. John's hospital at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, August 6, age 69. Survived by two sons, Walter L. of Rochester and T. F. of Springfield; one brother, Minor Saunders of Dorchester, Neb.; one sister, Mrs. Mary Allen of Decatur; ten grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the residence of her son, Walter L. Sturdy, three miles east of Rochester. Interment in Buckhart cemetery. C. L. Jones in charge. (Published Illinois State Journal, August 7, 1930, page 14, column 2.) Father's obituary: Sturdy, John William - Died at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, 1923, at the family residence in Rochester following a third stroke of apoplexy at the age of 84 years, 2 months and 9 days. Funeral announcement later. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ruth Sturdy, and two sons, Walter L. and T. F. Sturdy. (Pulbished Illinois State Journal 9/12/1923, page 12) From Wilson Park Funeral Home, the date on his paperwork is September 11, 1923. The date on his mother's paperwork is August 6, 1930.
